  • Thai floods a blow for HDD sector
    With a growing number of mergers and acquisitions and bottomed-out share prices, local hard disk drive (HDD) component manufacturers were just starting to garner some investor attention. Then came the floods in Thailand.

    The worst floods in half a century have disrupted the operations of not only the principal HDD players such as Western Digital Corp, but also component suppliers such as Eng Teknologi Holdings Bhd (Engtek) and Notion VTec Bhd, according to news reports.

    But all is not gloom and doom in the sector and Malaysian HDD players could benefit from a potential shift in production into the country.

    “Looking at the other side, the disruption of the HDD supply chain in Thailand could cause a shift of production to Malaysia, benefiting the HDD component makers here. They could also command better prices while the recent weakening of the ringgit (against the US dollar) will improve margins,” an industry observer told The Edge Financial Daily.

    He noted that among the major local HDD component players, Penang-based Dufu Technology Corp Bhd is the only one without a physical presence in Thailand.

    Once a booming industry with the rise in usage of personal computers and laptops, the HDD sector has taken a downward turn with the rise in demand for its main substitute, solid-state drives (SSDs). Demand for SSDs is being increasingly driven by the proliferation of tablets, such as Apple’s iPad and the upcoming launch of ultrabooks by Intel, which use SSDs rather than HDDs.
